This one I did all on my own. It turned out pretty well - but I wish I
would have asked for some advice before I started; it would've stopped me
from making a lot of little mistakes (which only I notice, I'm sure).
I wish I'd come up with the idea myself - but I
stole the idea from a piece I saw on the Seuss Navy sight (may it rest in
peace).
I used the same "scan/print/project" trick that I used on the walls and doors to get the pattern onto the
dresser. We bought an unfinished dresser from a local store (about $150) and
I sanded it, primed it, painted it (3 coats), put on the characters and
lettering, then applied about 5 coats of clear coat.
Make
sure you purchase clear coating material that is specifically designed
to be applied over whatever paint you are buying. Some clear coats will
yellow, or worse, smear the underlying paint. Behr sells one specifically formulated to be applied over their latex paints.
If I was going to do it again, I would look for some clear coating that
was in a spray can - applying the poly with a brush was arduous, and
you have to be diligent when watching for drips.
